The Whitefish Chain of Lakes is
a set of 14 interconnected lakes situated between the communities of Crosslake, Pequot Lakes and Pine River. The Whitefish Chain offers not only
spectacular boating and fishing with more than 14,000 acres of water to explore,
but also a great opportunity for you to enjoy your own sugar sand beach and
relax afloat the sky blue waters in front of your beautiful lake home.
Whitefish
serves as one of the DNR's primary walleye egg take sites at the mouth of the
Pine River. Because of this, the lake is stocked annually, with at least 5,000,000
walleye fry being put back into the lake from the eggs collected at the walleye
trap. Whitefish is also stocked in even numbered years with fingerlings. The beautiful, natural scenery
of the Whitefish Chain extends
beyond the shore's edge, with trails for hiking and biking, as well as snowmobiling and
cross country
skiing.
The Whitefish Chain Region is
home to the Paul Bunyan Trail, a 100+ mile rails to trails project
offering a flat, paved surface ideal for biking, rollerblading or walking. The National Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway driving route also winds its way completely
around the Whitefish Chain, offering information and entertaining kiosks on the
historical, archaeological, cultural, recreational and scenic qualities of the
region.
There
are 20 golf courses within
a 30 mile radius of the Whitefish Chain, and a great variety of restaurants from
fine dining to lakeside dining and everything in between. Family-friendly attractions (which
include horseback riding, mini-golf and museums) are ideal for kids of all
ages, and the shopping is almost as good as the fishing.
Plan a getaway during one of
the fun local festivals in the region, and you'll never forgot your trip. Try
Winterfest in Crosslake, the Antique Snowmobile Rendezvous in Pequot Lakes,
Crosslake's St. Patrick's Day Parade or Classic Wooden Boat Show, Summerfest in
Pine River, Bean Hole Days in Pequot Lakes, and many more throughout the year.
