NEW! Firearms Safety Certification for Adults (18 and older)

Requirements
  • DNR Firearms Safety Certification is required of anyone born after December 31, 1979 to purchase a hunting license in Minnesota. Check requirements in other states  
  • Must successfully complete one of the Options of certification. (see below)
Options
Receive your Firearms Safety Certification or Apprentice Validation by completing one of the following options:
  1. Online course - complete the online course and virtual field day* (MN Residents Only)
  2. Independent study guide and workbook  - available from a volunteer instructor.
  3. Firearms Safety Classroom Course - currently scheduled classes 
  4. Apprentice Hunter Validation  (twice in a lifetime)
General Information
  • The MN DNR Firearms Safety Hunter Education endorsement can be listed on the back of a Minnesota driver's license or identification card upon request. The MN DNR # on your license is also your Hunter Education Identifier and is sufficient proof of course completion.
  • Duplicate firearms certificates are available through any DNR License Agent or by calling toll free 1-888-646-6367 or local 651-296-6157.
